How To Build A Shed Foundation

Before starting your shed foundation, check your local building code to make sure you will have no regulation issues. Check with your local zoning to make sure if there are any distance requirements from the property line, your house, etc..

Now that you are aware of any regulations, you can determine the location.

Foundation

When choosing a location pay careful attention to the drainage. Try choosing a location where water will not pool. Sloping the ground will direct water so it will not pool near your shed foundation.

How To Build A Shed Foundation

If you will be using a skid foundation, adding crushed gravel about three to four inches thick, and about a foot wider than the shed will also help protect your shed foundation from water and moister.

Unlike a skid foundation, a concrete slab foundation will be permanent, once it is poured it can not be moved.Building a concrete slab foundation starts with leveling the site. Then you will build your forms and position a layer of welded wire mesh to provide reinforcement and help prevent cracking. Next the concrete is cast over it.

If you do not feel comfortable making your own concrete slab foundation, consider hiring a professional.

Although you can build a shed on a concrete slab, the majority of storage sheds are built on skid foundations.

When choosing lumber to build your skid foundation, choose pressure treated lumber to prevent decay. Prepare the area by removing four to six inches of soil about twelve inches wider than the shed, and fill with gravel.

Building the foundation for your shed is not that difficult, but you should take into consideration weather or not you have the skills. Will you have the time, and the tools.

One of the great advantages of doing it yourself is the money you will be saving. By making a shopping list of all the material, you can get a good estimate for the price of this project. You can then compare your estimate to having it done. About half the cost of any project is the labor, by doing it yourself you can even go for a larger shed with the same budget.

Let's get started.

How to Improve Skin Complexion - Even Skin Tone and Get a Fair Skin Complexion With These Simple Tip

Treating blemishes and uneven skin tone

If you're plagued by blemishes or uneven skin tone from, for example, acne breakouts, you may need to use a gentle skin lightening product to even out the color. Stay away from "skin bleaching" products that contain harsh chemicals, especially when you're treating your face. We'll look more at these specific products in the next section.

Also important for improving skin complexion is to use a cream that helps your skin to renew itself. Anything that stimulates the skin to produce new cells can help to reduce blemishes.

Natural oils and emollients like avocado oil and shea butter also provide a lot of benefits to the skin. Shea butter in particular is known to contribute to the healing of scar tissue and blemishes, and also helps in treating sun damaged skin.

Powerful antioxidants like CoenzymeQ10, when used in a nano-formulation as part of a skin cream, can also help to repair damaged cells, while stimulating cell growth at the same time.

How to improve skin complexion by lightening skin color

If you have a dark complexion, you may feel the need to lighten it. We already touched on skin lightening above, so let's look at exactly what safe and natural ingredients you can use here to achieve a more fair skin complexion.

Extrapone Nutgrass Root is an ingredient used in certain lightening creams. The good thing about it is that it is not only extremely effective at inhibiting the skin pigment called melanin, but it is also very gentle on the skin as it was originally developed as an anti-irritant.

Melanin, in case you didn't know, is the pigment that determines skin color. The more melanin you have, the darker your skin.

You can use a lightening cream either on dark spots to even out skin tone, or you can use it to lighten your skin complexion in general.

In addition to the above, always make sure you follow a healthy lifestyle and diet to improve complexion. If you consume only junk food and soft drinks and never exercise, any skin care product will have a hard time having a positive effect as it will be fighting the damage you are doing to your body as well.

Foundation Repair

The principal function of a foundation of a home is to transfer the weight of a structure to its underlying soil and rocks. One of the factors that bring about the need for foundation repairs is improper foundation settling. Foundation settlement can devalue structures and also render them unsafe. Building on expansive clay, compressive or improperly contracted fill soils and improper maintenance in and around foundations are some of the major reasons of improper foundation settling. Another reason for improper foundation settlement is undetected or unsuspected air pockets in the ground below the area of construction. These may cave in and cause the integrity of the foundation to be compromised.

General symptoms of a structure needing foundation repairs are bulging or cracked walls and doors that don't close properly. Building on expansive soils is the main culprit for foundation settlement. When only one part of the foundation either settles or heaves, cracks are formed in the foundation. The exterior warning signs of improper floor settling are rotation of walls, displaced moldings, cracked bricks and foundation and separation around doors and windows from the walls. Interior warning signs of improper floor settling are cracks on the floor, sheet rock and misalignment in doors and windows.

Foundation

There are many ways of doing foundation repair. Cement, stone, steel or wood were used extensively in past techniques. They would be forced into the ground in a bid to salvage the strength of these foundations. However, this type of repair work has been known to be futile. Two of the most successful ways of foundation repairs are slab jacking and the Piering method. Piering is also known as hydraulic jacking.

Foundation Repair

Slab jacking is the process of adding grout beneath a slab or beam. This produces a lifting force and restores the said beam or slab to almost its original elevation and adds to its strength. Care should be taken that the amount of sand should be perfect while adding grout.

During Piering, steel posts are driven through unstable soil. Hydraulic jacks are used to stabilize concrete slabs which are weakened due to the changes taking place in the underlying soil. Steel beams are used in the Piering method because concrete has great compressive strength. Though Piers are able to transfer huge downward loads without the help of reinforcing steel, steel is used in the piers for prevention of the pier from being pulled apart or sheared by forces of the expansive soils. The repairs normally take 21 to 30 days, however this time frame can vary depending on soil conditions and weather delays.

Spotting Foundation Problems

Without a doubt, when it comes to expense, foundation problems rank high in the list of home repair costs. This is so because foundation repair often requires digging under your house, either just around the outside or right through your interior slab.

A responsible homeowner regularly checks for foundation problems. By doing this, you may be able to avoid further problems and save you a great deal of money. Below is a list of some of the things you need to observe to help you detect foundation problems.

\"Best Foundation For Oily Skin\"

o Check for gaps around your fascia boards. Check for uneven or sloping floors as evidenced by sliding furniture. Squeaky floors can mean two things, either the floorboards simply needs to be re-nailed or you have a foundation problem in your hands.

Spotting Foundation Problems

o Check for wrinkles in your wallpaper, gaps between the wall and moldings, or cracks in the sheetrock. Also, look at your windows and see if the frames are distorted. Examine every doorway; see if your doors stick or if the door frames have cracks. Major cracks (/16 wide or larger) or bowing (exceeding 1-1/2" vertically in 7ft. 2-1/2" horizontally in 16 ft) of basement walls is a cause for concern.

o Check if your brickwork is broken or if the mortars are cracked. This usually comes after the slabs have been flexed. See if the concrete driveways, pathways, etcetera slope away and not towards the foundation. If it slopes towards the house, you may have water standing on one side. Water should never be allowed to stand in an area next to the foundation.

o Inspect your foundation for cracks in the slabs that is most often the result of shrinking of the soil underneath a section and swelling in another section of the slab. Do not allow your house to sink further and further each year. If you do, this may turn into a serious problem.

o See if you have termites. Go around your house and search for mud tunnels. The difference between a termite mud tunnel and that of an ant's is that the latter can be wiped away easily.

o Inspect the perimeter of your home for signs of down spout problems. Try to see if there are possible indications of groundwater flowing back toward the foundation due to negative grade.

o Examine your home for possible signs of foundation movement especially settling or sinking. Movement that is more than two inches and appears to be worsening each year is a cause for concern. If you feel the situation is severe, call a professional immediately.

o There should be at least eight feet distance between your foundation and small trees, shrubs, and plants. This is particularly vital to homes built on a clay based soil environment.

In case you come across any one of these signs, do not panic. Most problems can be corrected easily and at a relatively cheap cost. The key is to catch the problem early while it is still small. With modern methods such as jacking and stabilizing, it is now possible to adjust your home back to level and square frame condition with ease.

Brick Foundation Repair

Everyone with a brick home knows how annoying and unsightly it is to have structural damage on the brick foundation. This type of damage is dangerous to your home, as well as expensive to repair. It is very important to call a professional to fix the damage as soon as you notice any problem. Waiting will cause the damage to spread and get worse. This will increase the cost and the difficulty of repairing the foundation. It is a good thing that foundation damage on brick is easy to spot, just as long as you know what you are looking for.

Signs of Damage

Foundation

The first step in looking for foundation damage in your brick home is to carefully check where the cracks are forming. Finding this information will determine the cause of the damage, thus allowing you to figure out the proper steps to fix it. If you do not find the cause or do something about it, any repair you do on your foundation will only be a temporary solution. The problem will return if you don't address the root cause of the damage first.

Brick Foundation Repair

If you only find one brick cracked you may not have to worry too much. This could simply be a sign that the brick itself is defective. However, if multiple bricks are cracked you need to have to consult a professional foundation contractor. This could be the early signs of foundation problems. This is especially true if the crack is long and continuous. This type of crack could be an early sign of movement of the wall.

If you leave this type of damage alone and ignore the early warning signs, the damage will get worse very quickly. If left unchecked, this type of damage will be devastating. It will cost you more to rebuild than to fix the foundation damage.

Stone Foundation Repair - What to Do?

Owning an historic property with an old stone foundation can be an interesting experience. Those with a strong will and a sound pocketbook can be true caretakers of a piece of history. The foundation of that history is the simple, bold and strong field stone foundation wall.

Older buildings with a stone foundation will generally have the original stone facing visible on the exterior and interior of the building. However it was common to apply a coating of plaster to the interior foundation wall in the basement area, as a means of waterproofing so the stone may not be visible from inside of the building.

Foundation

Most of the original plaster would have worn off by today but if you are lucky, you just may run across an old stone foundation still in pristine condition but this would be the exception.

Stone Foundation Repair - What to Do?

Usually after 30 - 50 years the foundation would have shifted cause cracks to appear in the foundation wall and it wasn't uncommon to apply a second to the foundation with a masonry cement stucco. If the second layer is cement stucco than it would indicate that the second coating must have been applied after the early 1900's, when mass produced cement stucco became available.

Regardless if plaster or stucco was applied to the walls, they will look lumpy as the individual stones shapes will show beneath the plaster or stucco.

What to look for -A lot of these older stone foundations were never well maintained and can challenge a building owner with problems ranging from water leakage, mortar turning into sand, loose stones and bulging walls. Anything beyond these few maintenance problems could be considered 'in failure' and may need an engineer's inspection.

Stone foundation walls that leak - It wasn't uncommon for these old stone foundation walls to leak. When they were originally constructed a hole was simply dug to the dimensions of the building and a trench dug where the walls were to be placed. Large field stones would be placed in the trench and became the bed stones of the foundation wall.

Drain tile were not in use around the foundations of older building so static pressure would have been a problem from the beginning depending or the soil type and topography. A high quality builder would have trenched to daylight from the low corner of the building site to take water away from the foundation, if the site permitted. The trench would be partially filled with rubble stones before covering but this simply drainage technique would be an exception and not the rule.

Most of the older homes were constructed high off the ground to keep moisture to a minimum. The basement area for these homes where never intended to be used as living space so a little moisture would have been common and of no concern.

Stone foundation wall problems - Decades of water infiltration will cause deterioration to the stone foundation walls. The result can be bulged walls from excessive static pressure or settlement of the foundation, deteriorated mortar joints from excessive moister or loose stones and missing mortar joints from simple aging and movement.

Bulged walls - This problem presents the biggest hurdle for a building owner depending on the degree and severity of the bulging problem and the location within the foundation wall. Generally though, a portion of the foundation wall can be removed and rebuilt but proper shoring must be in place to support the building load before you proceed. This should not be out of the range of an experienced mason contractor and you should seek their advice.

Loose stones and missing mortar - These items are simple to remedy. Loose stones should be taken out and re-set with fresh mortar. Care should be taken not to undermine any critical support areas within the foundation. If you suspect an area of loose stone is carrying a beam load or other loads then consult a professional for advice.

Holes and missing joints can be filled with mortar or tuck-pointed to help tighten the foundation walls. Any brand of masons mix available at the local box store should be adequate.

After you have completed the repairs mentioned above you may wish to apply another layer of cement stucco. This will help to smooth out imperfections, close small holes, 'stiffen' the walls surface and hopefully provide some protection against water leaks.

Check the foundation annually and make any necessary repairs immediately. By taking immediate action and implementing the repairs recommended above you will be one step closer to keeping that old, stone foundation in shape.

Home Foundations - Cost Differences For Building Foundations

A good foundation for your home is critical. A foundation requires good design and proper materials. Most importantly, it needs to be built right! While some errors in the foundation can be rectified later on during framing, the extra time and hassle is just not worth it.

There are several options to consider when building your home. Actually, the options are best considered during your home's design, well before you begin building.

Foundation

Major Types of Foundations

Home Foundations - Cost Differences For Building Foundations

Let's look at a few of the most popular foundation types and materials. I'll include some pros and cons, then we'll discuss the cost differences to help you decide the best approach for you.

1) Slab on Grade:

Slab on grade means concrete at ground level. This is very common in the West. These can be among the least expensive approaches to building a foundation but not as "repair friendly" if buried plumbing needs fixing. Slab foundations can also crack slightly which usually only poses a minor problem.

With a slab on grade, not only does the cement support your home directly, it acts as your subfloor as well. This means you won't need foundational posts and beams for support, nor will you need joists or plywood for the floor.

2) Pier, Post, and Beam:

This type is often referred to as a crawl-space basement. The foundation is raised up above grade. There are "stem walls" of block or concrete around the perimeter of the house/foundation and cement piers support posts, and beams to hold up the floor joists and floor decking.

This gives you room to access plumbing and electrical for repairs and remodels. It doesn't use nearly as much cement. The cost of this foundation, when you include the extra costs for lumber, is often similar to the slab on grade foundation.

3) Full Basement:

A full basement is probably the most expensive to build. Usually consisting of poured cement and blocks for the 8 to 9 foot stem walls with various posts and beams. Also, a full basement usually requires a lot of expensive excavation.

The floor of the basement is usually a concrete slab. Quite a bit of cement goes into this type foundation. However, the extra space that the basement provides can be converted to fairly inexpensive additional square footage for living space in the home. Modifications for emergency exits may be required, however.

4) Partial Basement:

This is basically a combination approach utilizing both #2 and #3. This is an advantage when a basement is needed for storage and safety during storms. This would likely be the second most expensive foundation.

A partial basement requires less excavation work than a full basement, which saves money.

5) Walk-out Basement:

The walk-out (also called Daylight Basement) works well when the house is built on a hill or sloping lot. Usually, three sides of the home's basement are under or partially under ground and one side is completely open to the lower level of the property.

This type can be among the least costly to build. And a big advantage is that it can provide extra livable square footage for the home without special permits and modifications for emergency egress. Excavation should be minimal but you'll need a sloping lot to make this work.

Assessing Your Needs

As you analyze the differences, keep in mind the options your lot offers. For instance, the type soil, the slope, the excavation costs all have to be considered before you make up your mind.

Use a home building coach to help you make the best decision for your situation and needs.
